SENIOR SESSION OUTFIT GUIDE

What Should I Wear for Senior Photos?

The goal is to have fun and feel comfortable in front of the camera. I always recommend bringing a couple different options on the day of your photo session and I will help you determine what will look the best. If you book a session that allows for 3-4 outfits, I recommend bring 3 diverse outfits. An example of that would be bringing a casual look, formal look and a personality look such as a sport or interest.

It's important to determine what vibe you are wanting for your session in order to help determine what style to go with. One style option is to go with the classic graduation look which includes items like a cap and gown, confetti, and/or your college sweatshirt or sport uniform. Another style option is more editorial, which includes more magazine-like items such as flower bouquets, disco balls, mirrors and other fun item. The good news is- you can do both looks in one session :)

While props are not needed by any means, some clients love them! Whether you are bringing props and accessories for your shoot or just bringing yourself and your smile, I will make sure we bring your vision to life and capture this important time in your life.

My number one piece of advice is to bring at least one outfit with a lot of movement. The easiest way to do this is by bringing a dress or two. If you are doing a cap and gown session, the dress you wear with your gown should be shorter in length than the gown itself.

If you want to dress up your session without spending a ton of money, a lot of girls love Rent the Runway, FashionPass, or Nuuly so they can rent elevated options. Or make it an excuse to go have a fun shopping trip with your friends or mom to get some fun new permanent pieces for your session and your wardrobe!

DETERMINING YOUR STYLE

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

THE GIRLS

I recommend choosing long, flowing dresses or skirts for at least one of your outfit choices because they are flattering on all body types, look amazing on camera and bring extra movement to your photos. Long, flowy dresses or maxi skirts give the best "twirl factor," and add elegance to your photos. If dresses aren't your vibe, don't worry! While dress and skirts are a great way to add movement and elegance to your photos, there are ways those can be achieved without wearing a dress.

THE GUYS

If you're a guy looking to level up your senior photos, you can't go wrong with  dress pants and a button-up shirt. I recommend bringing at least one somewhat "formal" or nicer outfit to your session. It provides a classic look that never goes out of style-plus you'll have a nice headshot for your LinkedIn profile. Guys can also utilize props just as much as the girls. Bringing something related to your sport is a great way to feel more like you and more comfortable in front of the camera. If you don't play a sport here are some other great options of what you can include in your photos: fishing pole, your truck, dog and/or an instrument you play.

STAYING AUTHENTIC TO YOU

The number one most important outfit you can bring is something that looks like "your style" such as a favorite shirt or outfit. This tends to be a more casual outfit that includes items such as shorts, matching sets, rompers and jeans. Remember that these are all just ideas to help guide you. Always choose clothing that is true to your style, comfortable, and makes you feel confident.

TIPS TO REMEMBER

When the weather is cooler, bring layers. Even just bringing a cute jean jacket can pull together a look and add variety to your photos. If needed, bring a warm coat to wear when we are not shooting. If it's going to be hot out, consider bringing a fan to help cool you down and don't forget to bring water!

When deciding on what shoes to wear be mindful of your outfits as well as the location. Make sure your shoes are clean and presentable. It is also a good idea to bring shoes that you are comfortable walking in to put on when walking to the next photo location. If you are going to wear sandals or any open-toed shoes, avoid wearing socks before your photo session to avoid any sock imprints on your ankle.

Nails look best with a neutral color or natural nails with clear or no polish. Hands will show up in a lot of poses. All clothing should be ironed as wrinkles stand out and are visible in photos. The best way to transport your outfits is on hangers.

Make sure to plan ahead with your hair. It's always a good idea to get a fresh hair cut if possible before your session. Haircuts usually look their best 0-2 weeks after the haircut. If your hair gets curly and/or frizzy in the hot and humid weather, don't try to wear your hair straight if it's hot and humid out.

Apply makeup as you normally would. You want these photos to highlight your natural beauty. Avoid going too glam to avoid not looking like yourself. If you do want to take some photos with a slightly more glam look, I recommend starting your session with the more natural make up and then building on it as the session goes on.
